“MOSAICO SUDAMERICANO”

I – Scherzo Latinoamericano

II – Nocturno Pampeano

III – Toccata Andina

ENGLISH text:

Written in Paris during 1998, as a string quartet, it was orchestrated for string orchestra by the author in 2000. It has three movements with the scheme Vite – Lent – Vite. It was premiered, in its form of Quartet no. 1 at the Colón Theater in Buenos Aires, Argentina, by Alberto Lysy and members of the Menuhin Academy of Switzerland on September 20, 1998. The version for string orchestra was premiered in 2000 by the Orchester de Cannes at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes Côte d’Azur, France. The first movement, Scherzo Latinoamericain, is written in Sonata form, with a first and a second very differentiated Themes, with a Coda that leads to the development, what happens on the second theme and the coda, ending with the re-exposure of the first theme . The general character of this movement is Latin American, with the use of pentatonic scales alongside atonal and tonal formulas. This movement was premiered in its version for string orchestra by the London Schubert Chamber Orchestra, London, on September 23, 1999. The second movement, Nocturne Pampeano (i.e. Pampas) has suggestive atmospheres, at its beginning in a kind of chorale, which gradually turn into motifs of high dramatic content in the central part, to finish in a character similar to that of the beginning. La Toccata Andina (or the Andes) with which the Mosaic finishes, after exhibiting the 1st. theme by the 1st. Violins, as an introductory way, remembered by a popular dance rhythm from the North of Argentina, transforms into a canon of four voices, by augmentation, with irregular rhythmic impulses, expressed by great energy, in the culmination of the work.
